Spring is a season of renewal—a time to refresh our surroundings, clear out the clutter and embrace new energy. But while many of us focus on tidying up our homes, we often overlook an equally important task: decluttering our minds and refocusing our energy.

How to Start on a Clean Slate

As a life coach, I know that mental, emotional, and physical clutter can weigh us down, making it harder to move forward with clarity and purpose. We all know the feeling of walking into a room covered in clutter – mountains of laundry or mail, piles of dishes or toys. It can feel daunting even to get started. In my life coaching sessions, I always encourage people to just take the first step, a series of small steps can end in momentous results, all you have to do is start. This season, let’s commit to a deep, soul-level spring cleaning.

Clearing Mental Clutter

Our minds are constantly bombarded with information, to-do lists and worries. Just like a cluttered room can feel overwhelming, a cluttered mind can leave us feeling scattered and stressed. Here’s how to create space for clarity:

  • Meditation for Mental Reset: Daily meditation, even for just five minutes, helps clear mental fog and improve focus. Studies show meditation reduces stress and enhances emotional regulation. Try a simple breathing exercise: inhale deeply for four seconds, hold for four, and exhale for four.
  • Brain Dump Journaling: Writing down thoughts, worries and tasks helps unload mental clutter. Set aside a few minutes each morning or evening to journal freely, letting go of thoughts that no longer serve you.
  • Limit Information Overload: Constant news, emails and social media updates can be overwhelming according to the American Psychological Association. Set boundaries by scheduling screen-free time, especially before bed, to allow your mind to unwind.

Releasing Emotional Baggage

Emotional clutter—unresolved feelings, toxic relationships, or lingering negativity—can be just as suffocating as physical mess. Here’s how to lighten the load:

  • Self-Compassion Practices: Be kind to yourself. Instead of replaying past mistakes, acknowledge your growth. A great self-care tip is to practice positive affirmations daily, such as “I am enough” or “I release what no longer serves me.”
  • Declutter Your Relationships: Take stock of the people in your life. Are your relationships uplifting or draining? Setting healthy boundaries with those who bring negativity can free up emotional space for more fulfilling connections.
  • Let Go and Let God: Sometimes, we hold onto emotions or situations out of habit. Spring is the perfect time to release past grievances and make space for new, positive experiences). For me, releasing control to my higher power helps to relieve the stress of holding onto burdens and baggage.

Refreshing Your Physical Energy

Our physical environment and habits directly impact our mental and emotional well-being. Here’s how to reset your body this season:

  • Move with Purpose: Regular movement, whether it’s a walk in nature, a yoga session, or strength training, helps clear stagnant energy. Exercise releases endorphins, improving both mood and energy levels, but don’t just take it from me (Mayo Clinic).
  • Nourish Your Body: A diet rich in whole foods, hydration, and seasonal fruits and vegetables helps fuel your body and mind. Think of it as internal spring cleaning—flushing out toxins and revitalizing from within.
  • Optimize Your Sleep Space: Quality sleep is essential for mental clarity. Declutter your bedroom, limit screen time before bed, and establish a relaxing nighttime routine for deeper rest.
    • Resource:  The Sleep Foundation offers some great resources for improving your sleep.

Aligning with Your Purpose

Spring is an opportunity to realign with what truly matters. Ask yourself:

  • What areas of my life feel cluttered or stagnant?
  • What goals or passions do I want to revisit?
  • How can I create more space for what energizes me?

By embracing self-care, meditation, and intentional living, you can move into spring feeling lighter, clearer, and more focused. Let this season be a fresh start—not just for your home, but for your soul.
